Faith is the substance of things hoped for.
What we have here is not a definition of faith but a declaration of its action. Faith is certain the ship is coming to port although it cannot be seen. The eleventh chapter of Hebrews, called “the Westminster Abbey of the Bible,” is a remarkable dissertation on “faith.” We have the path of faith in 11:1–7; the patience of faith, 11:8–22; the power of faith, 11:23–40; the pattern of faith, 12:1–2. Faithful means full of faith.
