Fifty-First Week: Godly Contentment

Godliness with contentment is great gain.
—1 Timothy 6:6

Contentment, then, is not self-manufactured. It springs from godliness. It is not a question of trying to be content under all circumstances, but the willingness to abide in the will of God that produces the coveted grace we have considered this week. And, truly, godly contentment is great gain. Think of what we ourselves gain! In a discontented world we exhibit poise, confidence, and tranquility commendable to our Christian profession. Contentment in a believer is likewise beneficial to those around. Tempted to fuss, fume and worry, our God-begotten calm even when we do suffer, brings those whose minds are like a troubled sea, to a new understanding of the marvelous grace of our God. Then, He too, becomes a gainer by our contented spirit.
