The Evidence of the Spirit

If ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
—Romans 8:13-14

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
—Galatians 5:25

We…are changed into the same image…even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
—2 Corinthians 3:18

Words like these define the operations of the Spirit. Obedience is the evidence of the Spirit’s presence in your life. Jesus gave Him as our Teacher and Guide. All Scripture speaks of His work as demanding the surrender of the whole life.

God is first known by His works, and so is the Spirit. He reveals God’s will and calls us to follow Him in it. As the believer surrenders himself to a life in the Spirit and consents to the rule of Christ, he will find and know the Spirit working in him. It is as we simply make the aim of the Holy Spirit our aim that we are prepared to know Him as dwelling in us. The Spirit Himself will lead us to obey God even as Christ did. We will know the Spirit intimately as we yield ourselves to an obedient life.

There is no way of knowing a fruit except by tasting it. There is no way of knowing the light except by being in it and using it. There is no way of knowing a person except by conversation with him. There is no way of knowing the Holy Spirit except by possessing Him and being possessed of Him. To live in the Spirit is the only way to know the Spirit. To have Him in us, doing His work and giving us His fellowship, is the path the Master opens when He says, “Ye know him; for he…shall be in you” (John 14:17).

The Father has sent the Spirit so that we may fully share in the glorified Christ! Let us yield ourselves completely to the indwelling and teaching of the blessed Spirit whom the Son has given us from the Father.
