Fifteenth Week: Our Lord’s Death

It is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people,
and that the whole nation perish not.
—John 11:50

A study of John 11:47–52 makes it clear that Caiaphas, although among those who rejected Christ, yet under the Spirit’s inspiration, predicted that Christ would die for the salvation of both Jews and Gentiles, and that the cross would destroy the partition-wall between them, bringing both together into one fold. The authoritative announcement of Caiaphas likewise contradicts the theory of a selective redemption. It also proves the substitutionary aspect of Calvary. Christ died for the people, so that they perish not.
