Fifteenth Week: Our Lord’s Death

The Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
—Galatians 2:20

Nothing can fill the soul with gratitude like the endeavor to separate oneself from a world of teeming millions, and realize that while Christ died for all, He yet died for you and me, personally. Paul never got away from the personal aspect of the cross. That Christ loved him and died for him overpowered the apostle, and became the greatest incentive of his utter devotion to Jesus Christ. Loved me—gave Himself for me. Is it not the wonder of wonders that Christ should die for you? What was there in you to love? What virtue did Christ see in you, constraining Him to die for you? No merit of yours, only your misery drew forth the sacrifice of Calvary.
