Fifteenth Week: Our Lord’s Death

God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross.
—Galatians 6:14

The apostle Paul turns from those who glory in the flesh to the only perfect object of boasting, namely, the old rugged cross. Glorying in the flesh and glorying in the cross do not mix. We cannot make much of the Crucified and of ourselves at the same time. The one glorying blasts the other. Paul could glory in the cross, seeing that it represented four sublime truths: A Law that had been satisfied, a love that had been manifested, a liberty that had been secured, and a Life that must be lived. Let us not lose sight of the three crosses Paul speaks of the cross on which Jesus died, the cross on which the world hangs, and the cross on which the saint is found.
