Fifty-Second Week: The End

The power of an endless life.
—Hebrews 7:16

Here we are at the year’s end. Near to midnight many saints will gather at watch night services to spend the closing moments in penitence and prayer. The past will be reviewed and cleansing sought for the failure marking the way. But although we recognize the passing of the old year, and the dawning of a new, the Lord offers the sinning sons and daughters of Adam’s race the power of an endless life. What blessed continuance! God grant that when my December reaches the end of its thirty-first day, the new sun will rise bringing the New Year of unending bliss! Thus, as we part company with another year and watch its death, let us praise God for the promise of a life in which our years will know no end.

I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
(lyric from “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go”)
