Thirtieth Week: Witnesses

A true witness delivereth souls.
—Proverbs 14:25

Solomon has some pointed things to say about witness-bearing in the chapter before us. “A faithful witness will not lie; but a false witness will utter lies” (verse 5). So there are two kinds of witnesses—faithful and false. The true witness delivers souls and never lies about the peril of rejecting Christ. The false witness deceives souls when the message he has to deliver is falsified. For instance, when a preacher tells a congregation that there is no eternal retribution for sin; that hell is not a grim reality, he lies, seeing that the express teaching of Christ affirms there is such a place of torment for all who despise His claims.
