Thirtieth Week: Witnesses

A witness, to bear witness of the Light.
—John 1:7

The ministry of John the Baptist was an enlightening one. Light came to men’s minds as he testified of Christ, who came as “the true Light” (verse 9). Lest men should mistake the forerunner for the Fulfiller, John makes it clear that John the Baptist was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. And the purpose of such a witness was that “all men through him might believe.”

Does our personal witness inspire faith? Have souls groping in the darkness of sin found their way to “the light of the world,” (John 8:12) as the result of our testimony? By lip and life are we bearing witness to the One whose precious blood can make the vilest sinner clean? As lights, let us not fail “the Light.”
