…the face of an eagle.
—Ezekiel 1:10; 10:14
The eagle is supreme in the realm above, just as men, oxen, and lions, are supreme in their respective realms. Eagles have undisputed supremacy over the birds of the air. The eagle is king of the skies.
This kingly bird possesses a striking face. It carries nobility born of keenness of vision. High above the earth it is used to gazing into the vast expanse of heaven. What eyes the eagle has! Have we the eagle flight and face? A poet reminds us that “man at his best grows wings.” Are we at our best? Have we developed wings? Alas, we fly too low! Our lives are too earthy. We fly according to the scale of the sparrow, hopping around the doors of the world for a few paltry crumbs. God means us to have the heavenly eyes of the eagle.
