And the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
—Acts 11:26
The sacred term Christian was used at Antioch as a nickname. Noticing how like Christ His disciples were, the name Christian, meaning a follower or slave of Christ, was coined. Followers of Wesley are known as Wesleyans. Disciples, then, are Christians, not only scholars, but saints. Learning of Christ, we become like Him. Unfortunately all disciples are not as Christian as they should be. Lessons are taken in the divine school, but the life of the Master-Teacher is not imbibed. The true purpose of our spiritual education is not the mere reception of knowledge from Him, but transformation into the Christ-likeness of life, which the designation of Christian implies.
