He…began to wash the disciples’ feet.

One very hard lesson for the disciples to learn was that of humility. They wanted seats on a throne. Position was more important to them than hidden ministries. They were willing to shine, but not to serve. And so like the perfect Teacher He was, Jesus taught His own by example. In this pictorial fashion He inferred that the disciple is not above his master. (See Matthew 10:24.) Do you place honor before humility? Are you slow to learn from the teachings and example of your Lord that lowliness is the only road to lordship? The only way up is down.
